Monthly, quarterly, half-yearly and annual plans, admission fees, personal training and discounts: how to set gym prices that fill your gym and still make money.
Pricing is one of the few decisions that changes your profit overnight. Price too low and you fill the gym but can't pay the bills. Price too high and you sit empty while the gym down the road is full. This guide shows how to set plan prices step by step, with examples.
Add up your monthly running costs: rent, electricity, salaries, cleaning, maintenance, software and marketing. Then decide how many paying members your space can comfortably hold at peak hours.
Example: monthly costs of ₹2,40,000 and a comfortable capacity of 300 members means you need at least ₹800 per member per month just to break even. Your price must be above this, with room for profit and slow months.
Visit three or four nearby gyms and note their monthly price, admission fee and what is included. You don't have to match them. You need to know where you sit: budget, mid-range or premium. If you charge more, members should see why: better equipment, air conditioning, cleaner washrooms, more trainers or longer hours.
Most Indian gyms do well with four plans:
Example ladder for a mid-range gym:
Longer plans give you cash upfront and lower churn. Just make sure the annual price still covers your cost per member.
An admission fee of ₹500 to ₹1,000 is common. It covers the time spent on induction and filters out people who sign up for one month and vanish. Many gyms waive it during offers or for annual plans, which makes the longer plan more attractive.
Price personal training separately from membership. A common model is a monthly PT fee on top of the membership, split between the gym and the trainer. Be clear about how many sessions a month are included.
Sometimes you'll agree a special price with a member: a corporate group, a student, a long-time member. That's fine, but record the actual agreed price on their membership so your dues and revenue reports stay correct.
Costs rise every year. Review your prices annually and raise them modestly for new members first. Existing members can renew at their old price for one more cycle, which rewards loyalty and softens the change.
