A plain-language guide to GST for gym owners in India: when to register, what a proper gym invoice needs, and mistakes to avoid. Always confirm the details with your CA.
GST is one of those topics gym owners put off until a notice arrives or a corporate client asks for a proper tax invoice. This guide explains the basics in plain language so you know what to ask your chartered accountant.
This is general information, not tax advice. Rules and rates change, and your situation may differ. Always confirm with a qualified CA.
GST registration is generally required once your annual turnover from services crosses the registration threshold set for your state. Many gyms register earlier, for example to issue proper tax invoices to corporate clients or to claim input tax credit on equipment and other purchases. Your CA will tell you the current threshold and whether registering early makes sense for you.
Fitness centre and gym services are generally taxed under GST, and the rate is set by the government's notifications for the relevant service category. Confirm the current rate and the correct SAC code with your CA, and make sure your software uses the same rate on every invoice.
A proper tax invoice usually includes:
Invoices should never repeat numbers or have gaps that you can't explain.
Once registered, you may be able to claim credit for GST paid on business purchases such as equipment, rent (where GST is charged) and services. Keep proper GST invoices from your suppliers and share them with your CA every month.
Monthly, give your CA a list of all invoices issued, payments received (by method) and purchase invoices. Software that exports payments and invoices to CSV makes this a five-minute job instead of a weekend.
Kettlehive gives every payment a numbered invoice with your legal name, GSTIN and tax rate, keeps one invoice sequence per gym, never deletes payments (voids keep a reason), and exports everything to CSV for your CA. Set up your invoice details in a free trial.
